October Favorites

Wow guys, I can’t believe it’s already November! It feels like it was just yesterday I was pulling out all my sundresses and sandals out for the beginning of summer. After spending the majority of the year trying to pull myself together enough to commit to running this blog properly – not just half-assing it like I have been doing with a lot of things in my life since my mother passed away, which I’m trying really hard to work on now and get everything back on track – I’m finally ready to give this blog the time and attention and effort it deserves. From here on out, I’m promising better quality content and a more consistent posting schedule, so you all can expect posts on regular basis. One of my best friends has also agreed to be my photographer, which means you’ll get to see more of my outfits and more pictures of me on the blog (which terrifies me, to be completely honest). I’m really excited for all that’s about to happen on The City Lush and I hope you all are too.

Anyway, onto what you’re all here for: my October favorites! With my birthday (eek, I’m 27!) already completely behind us, I want to blog about all my favorite things that I’ve been completely obsessed with this past month. There’s a lot of beauty-related items on this list, since I’m currently on this makeup/YouTube tutorial kick right now, but I tried my hardest to include other things as well.

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation – Whether your skin is on the oily side, the dry side or a combination of both, Maybelline Fit Me Foundation has a product for you. For those with dry skin like me, go for their ‘Dewy and Smooth’ formula. On the other hand, if you’ve got oily or combination skin, try their ‘Matte and Poreless’ formula instead. I’ve personally never tried the Matte and Poreless formula, but I’ve honestly heard nothing but good things about it.

I live and die by the Dewy and Smooth formula though and for my dry skin, it’s a godsend. The foundation is lightweight, so you can go with one layer for medium coverage or build up to complete full coverage really easily without feeling like you’re caked in foundation. My favorite thing about the Dewy and Smooth formula is that it doesn’t make my skin flake-y as the day goes on, like most other foundation tend to do on me. Sometimes it was only a matter of minutes before I started seeing cracks in my foundation due to my dry skin and then it was pretty much inevitable that I’d start flaking out.

L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Eternal Sunshine – Okay, I’ve been completely obsessed with this product ever since the first time I tried it out. It’s this shimmery golden color that looks fantastic, without being too over the top. When I first swatched it onto the back of my hand, I think I stared at it for way too long for it to be normal. The funny thing is that I haven’t actually used it as an eyeshadow yet. Now, before you give me that side-eye, hear me out first. Thanks to a YouTube tutorial video by Lustrelux (you’ll hear more about her later), I tried it as a powder highlight first and I just fell in LOVE with it. Just take a medium-sized, semi-fluffy brush and lightly tap it onto your cheekbones. It’s honestly fantastic on it’s own but lately I’ve been layering it on top of the Temptu S/B Highlighter (see below) for even more of an awesome effect on my cheekbones.

Maybelline The Nudes/The Blushed Nudes Palette – Not too many makeup people I follow on YouTube or Instagram actually like these palettes. They say the formula is more chalky than creamy and that the pigmentation isn’t quite there compared to eyeshadows from Makeup Geek or Color Pop…and I completely agree. If I had a choice, I’d most likely pick a palette from one of those brands over these. But for all those people just starting out with makeup and/or starting to experimenting with eyeshadow looks, these two palettes are some of the best you’ll find at the drugstore and for the price. For a mere $9 (or so, depending on the drugstore you pick it up at), you get a palette of gorgeous earth-toned or rose gold-themed eyeshadows. The shadows aren’t super pigmented when swatched, but they’re easy to blend, even if you’ll have to use a little more product than you might be expecting to. What I also love about these palettes are that on the back of the packaging, there’s suggested combinations of the eyeshadow colors and where to apply them for any beginners that need a little instruction. Lately, I’ve been using The Blushed Nudes palette way more than any other (as you can see from me hitting the pan in two of my fave colors), because I love all the pink in it. Plus, it’s the perfect size for on-the-go makeup people like me, since I tend to do my makeup in the car instead of at home, especially when it comes to eyeshadow.

Temptu Silicone-Based Highligher in Champagne Shimmer – This product was one I received in my Septemper Ipsy bag and I think it was my favorite out of everything I received this month. After using the L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow as a powder highlight alone for a couple of weeks, I started looking for either a cream or liquid highlighter to use underneath it as a base. Then Ipsy came to my rescue and sent me this amazing liquid highlighter. I only use a couple of drops of it on my finger for each cheek, dabbing it lightly up and down my cheekbone with my fingertips before I apply my powder highlight. I’m still gonna look for a cream highlighter and see how it compares to this, but in terms of liquid highlighters, I totally love this one from Temptu.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara – I have this crazy soft spot for drugstore mascaras, because why pay more for a product when you already love a cheaper brand of it? But thanks to an advertisement I found in a Cosmo magazine while at work one day, I was able to get my hands on a free mini-sized bottle of this mascara. And let me tell you, I haven’t stopped wearing it yet…and it’s been like three weeks already. I love the way it really enhances my lashes and makes them look super bold. It’s also not a complete nightmare to remove at the end of the day and I haven’t had any issues with it smearing or running at all.

Lustrelux on YouTube/Snapchat/Instagram – Alright. So let me tell you just how obsessed I am with Katy’s tutorials on YouTube and her shenanigans on Snapchat, because it’s bordering on almost insane. She’s one of Ipsy’s stylists and that’s pretty much how I discovered her Snapchat and YouTube page. Ever since her Quick and Easy Drugstore Makeup tutorial, which is where I’ve pretty much taken my latest makeup routine from, I’ve been obsessed. I love her style and her looks, which range from traditional everyday to bold and sultry. She’s where my love of highlighting came from and her tutorials are where I learned how to properly put on foundation with a brush, which always confused the hell out of me before. If you’re looking for some amazing makeup tutorials or good product reviews, just go through Katy’s page on YouTube. If you’re in the mood for crazy shenanigans with her super cute puppy, Zoe, or cool looks at makeup swatches of all the awesome products she gets on a daily basis, look no further than her Snapchat account lusterlux (yes, it’s spelled differently than every other social media account she has, jsyk). Seriously. Following her has been one of the best decisions of my life. No joke.

So there you have it, all my favorite things that I’ve been obsessed with this month. I know this turned into a super LONG post, but that’s because I have a ton of favorites. You’re lucky I trimmed down my list, because originally, this was like three times longer. Anyways, let me know your thoughts on these products if you’ve tried any of them. Or if you have other favorites I should try, let me know down below as well.

Happy experimenting!
