About Me

Hi there! I’m Angelica Monique, a twenty-eight year old, born and raised in the Windy City.

Shopping has always been one of my favorite activities since I was little. My undeniable obsession was passed down from my mother in her never-ending quest to build the perfect wardrobe. The weekends we spent bonding by shopping all day long, especially as I got older, are some of my favorite memories of us together. In 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and began treatment. I launched The City Lush in January 2015 as a chance to honor my mother by blogging about the things she was passionate about, which I inherited from her. My love of accessories, dresses and shoes developed because of her penchant for the same things. I remember watching her get dressed every day, wishing I could look as beautiful as she always did. Even after chemotherapy, she still radiated beauty and strength. TCL is my personal way of keeping my mother’s presence in my life, even though she’s not here with me today.

It was only recently that I started to become more interested in beauty and makeup, beyond the general basics. Through high school and college, I only put on the bare minimum in terms of makeup on a daily basis. As I grew older though, my mother’s wise words about occasionally splurging on higher-end makeup products and the importance of a good skincare regimen began to make so much more sense than it use to. My daily makeup routine now is pretty much set, after lots of trial and error, and I can proudly say it only takes me about 20 minutes to go from before to after. Whether I’m sticking to my go-to makeup routine or experimenting with new looks, there’s two things I’ll never go without: a crazy awesome highlight and a bold, bright lip.

My personal style has transformed a lot over the past few years, much like my taste in makeup. I still tend to gravitate towards classic styles and silhouettes, but I’m learning to experiment outside of my comfort zone with outfits that I would’ve never tried to pull off a few years ago. Kate Middleton, Becca Tobin, Victoria Beckham, Lauren Conrad and Ashley Graham are just a few of my style icons. Lately, I’ve had a huge obsession with long-sleeved bodycon dresses, chambray shirts tied at the waist, and over-the-knee/knee-high heeled boots. My daily style goal is just to feel good in the things I wear and not spend a fortune doing it.

Living in the Chicago area for pretty much my entire life, this city is everything to me. But they always say that you know the least about the city you call home, so I’ve made it another goal of mine to explore every corner of it, from the loop to the suburbs. Whether it’s trying a new eatery in the heart of Logan Square, testing out the drink specials at a cool bar in Arlington Heights, or perusing through various pop-up shops of local designers at Block 37 with my favorite Chicago blogger babes, I’m all in. There’s so much to do in this city (and others!) as a twenty-something single woman and I want to bring you guys along for the ride!

Hopefully you find something here that you connect with and if you do, I’d love to hear from you!

Thanks so much for visiting and come back soon!
